You are running your own business or have become self-employed in the last few years and the time has come to reach out further than your own circle to generate more enquiries, but where do you start.  Setting up a free download or mailer is a good way to move into generating leads from the internet and building your own list.

If you are keen to start setting up routes to online marketing and are coming from a place where you have previously done your marketing offline then at some stage you will need to have a system for capturing email addresses.  The reason for this is that without capturing contact information from people who could be interested in your products and services you can’t communicate back to them.

 

FACT – PEOPLE ARE IN A HURRY

You have possibly been used to attending networking meetings and being handed a list of emails from the lovely host who organised your event, or being given a conference delegate list as you sign in and register for a conference.  These are all good ways of making connections, however in the online world people are always in a hurry and you only have a few seconds to make an impression and unless you can start to engage with people at the point at which they begin to think you may have something interesting and useful to offer you could lose them forever to the next person who captures their information.  So how do you capture information?

 

CREATE SOMETHING REALLY INTERESTING

The answer lies in creating something which which can be downloaded easily with very little risk to the potential client so that they can quickly find a solution to the problem they are trying to solve.  It should be something that answers the very question they are searching for e.g. how to win more clients, how to lose 10 lb in weight,  and in finding out about the solution they will learn more about you and begin to understand your thought patterns etc.  It could be downloaded or it could be posted to them and there are strategic reasons for doing both so you may need to think it through.

 

UPLOAD IT TO A SERVERlist thumbnail

If your risk free information piece is going to be downloaded rather than mailed out you will then need to upload it to a server which it can be downloaded from such as the mail chimp server, Amazon S3 or Rack Space.

 

LINK TO YOUR WEBSITE

Add a link to your e-book on your website or on a separate landing page such as Lead Pages, Squeeze page toolkit etc. with a call to action inviting browsers to click for the free download, mailer.

 

USE AUTOMATED OPT-IN

Link the email capture to an email service provides which has automatic opt in and this way you are complying with data protection and only adding to your list of people to communicate with those who have given you permission.  This is called permission based marketing and it is necessary to comply with the law.

 

PROMOTE

This invitation can then be displayed on your website, used in advertisements, or you can direct people to it through links on social media so that you promote your offering to those who are interested.
